What to Cover With a Construction Cleaning Company

Posted on: 26 July 2016

After any construction project, the home or building will need to be thoroughly cleaned before it can be occupied. Not all cleaning companies handle construction cleaning, as it's often very different than residential or commercial cleaning work. If you need to hire a construction cleaning company, either to get your home ready after renovation or because you're a builder who needs to ensure newly constructed projects are ready for buyers or tenants, note a few things to cover with any prospective companies. This will ensure you're choosing the right company for the job.

Windows

Many cleaning companies will simply clean the inside glass of windows, but for new construction, you may need the caulk around the glass to be scraped away. The windowsills and window frame may also need a thorough cleaning that isn't always needed with standard cleaning, as they may be very dusty and covered in fingerprints left behind by the installer.

Bathtubs

Since newly constructed or installed tubs and shower areas shouldn't have mould and mildew yet, a cleaner may not need to worry about cleaning the grout and tile. However, it's not unusual for construction dust and waste to collect in this area and not be thoroughly removed by the contractor. A cleaner may need a good wet-dry vac to actually remove this debris from the bathroom, so be sure you ask if they can accommodate this rather than them assuming they can just sponge out or scrub the tub.

Walls

Typically walls don't need to be washed in a home or commercial building, but in a newly constructed building, there may be fingerprints, dust, and other such marks left behind. A residential cleaner may not always offer wall washing, but you might need to check on this with a construction cleaning company to ensure the walls are clean after work is completed.

Trash removal

Many contractors will remove larger pieces of trash such as wood scraps, empty tubes of caulk, and the like. However, smaller scraps may be left behind, as well as items like painter's tape, rags, and things that are just overlooked by contractors. A construction cleaning company should be prepared to remove more trash than they would in a standard residential or commercial cleaning, as this trash won't be neatly placed in trash bags and bins. They may charge an additional fee for larger items if they won't fit in standard trash bags or for a certain number of bags they fill with this type of debris, so be sure you cover this and ensure they can remove this trash and know if it means added cost.
