4 Common Carpet Cleaning Mistakes

Posted on: 20 September 2016

While vacuuming your carpet might seem like a straightforward if somewhat boring chore, it is actually more complex than you think. If you are making one of the 4 mistakes listed below, you might not be cleaning your carpets effectively.

Rushing the job

You should always avoid quickly running the vacuum cleaner around a room in a hurry. If you rush a vacuuming job, the brush attachment will not have the time to properly agitate the fibres of the carpet and so will not be able to properly extract the debris and dust which are trapped between them. You should move the vacuum cleaner slowly over the carpet and cover the same spot multiple times in order to ensure your carpets are clean.

Not emptying the waste bag

A vacuum cleaner uses suction power to lift dirt from the surface on your carpets. The air which is sucked through your vacuum cleaner travels through the lining of the waste bag contained within it. This means that as the bag becomes full of dust and debris, the suction power of the vacuum cleaner is reduced. It is important that you empty the waste bag on your vacuum cleaner on a regular basis. For the best operation of your vacuum cleaner, you should never allow it to get more than around half-full.

Not adjusting the height of your vacuum cleaner

While some modern vacuum cleaners will automatically just their height depending on the surface they are being used on, the majority of vacuum cleaners still require manual adjustment. You should ensure you adjust the height of the vacuum cleaner so it matches the type of carpet you are cleaning. Generally, the lower the pile of the carpet, the lower you will need to set the vacuum cleaner. If you have the vacuum set too high, it will not be able to effectively lift dirt and debris from the carpet.

Not using the full range of attachments

Modern vacuum cleaners come with a wide range of attachments which are designed to help you to clean different surfaces and materials effectively. For instance, your vacuum cleaner will probably have a specially shaped attachment which will allow you to easily clean the carpet which is in the corner of a room. If you do not use these attachments, it is unlikely you will achieve a good result.
