Important Tips for Keeping a Trash Bin Safe on Your Property

If you manage an apartment complex or own a commercial building of any sort, you will probably need a rubbish bin on your property. Some homeowners may also opt for a long-term rubbish bin rental. If you're doing major renovations to your home or are building a new home, you'll need to keep the job site clean and organized. Whatever your reasons for needing a rubbish bin, note a few tips for keeping it safe and secure on your property.

1. Lock the lid when not in use

Even if your rubbish bin has a closing lid, this doesn't mean that someone won't try to access the bin to pick out what they think is salvageable trash or to try to find paperwork they can use for identity theft. Whatever their reasons for going into the bin, the bin could tip or cause injury to the person. Invest in a bin with an area for locking the lid in place and keep the bin locked after hours or at night, especially when the property will be vacant.

2. Place bins on stable ground

Never put the bin on grass, a sandy spot or in a muddy area. It may seem secure when empty, but when it gets heavier from being full, that weight may allow the bin to actually slide over this surface and out of place.

3. Never climb on or around the bin

It may seem like something that doesn't need to be said, but it's surprising how often a homeowner or maintenance worker will climb onto the top of the bin to push down items and try to make them fit more securely, or to move items around inside the bin. Even an experienced maintenance worker should avoid doing this, as a bin can easily tip at any time, causing him or her to stumble or causing something to fall onto that person. If items in the bin are overflowing or off-centre, it's better to call your bin rental agency and have them empty it than try to manage this problem yourself.

4. Be careful of fire hazards

If you've ever hit two metal items together and seen the sparks that result, you know how easy it is to start a fire in a rubbish bin; tossing in a metal item on top of another metal item can cause sparks that ignite nearby papers or other pieces. Papers might also ignite when in direct sunlight and near high heat. Be careful of these common but very dangerous fire hazards with your bin.
